Dr. Sara Ayres is Board-certified by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS). Just as in human medicine, veterinarians can complete an internship (1-2 years duration) followed by a residency (3 years duration) in an area of specialty (surgery, cardiology, ophthalmology, dermatology etc) after obtaining their veterinary degree.
The training is done under the guidance of Board-certified members. To meet the requirements of ACVS, an extensive log is maintained to document completion of the thorough training program and additional courses are completed in anesthesia, medicine and pathology. The veterinarian must then complete a rigorous 3 day examination to obtain Board-certification.
Following 4 years of advanced training, Dr. Ayres successfully completed her Board examinations in 2000. To further augment her training, Dr. Sara Ayres, also completed a one-year Fellowship in Surgical Oncology (the surgical treatment of cancer) at the University of Illinois in 2001.
Dr. Sara Ayres is available to provide consultations and perform simple and complicated surgical procedures. These surgeries include, but are not limited to, patellar luxation, urogenital surgery, total ear canal ablation, brachycephalic airway surgery and simple and complicated tumor removals.
Just as in human medicine, the patient is looked after best when we all work together. If you are interested in an appointment, please have your family veterinarian fill out our referral surgery form under the Request Surgical Referral tab.
