About Dr. Ayres
Dr. Sara Ayres knew from a young age that she wanted to work with animals. She grew up with dogs, rode horses during her teens, and spent a summer working on a dairy farm. She spent countless hours reading and re-reading the stories of James Herriot - it was through his eyes that she was introduced to the art and science of veterinary medicine. Dr. Ayres graduated from the Ontario Veterinary College in 1992 and worked in a small animal clinic in Oakville until 1994.
She then returned to the Ontario Veterinary College and completed a one-year internship and a three-year residency in small animal surgery and was board-certified by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in 2000.
She completed a one-year fellowship in surgical oncology (the surgical treatment of cancer) at the University of Illinois in 2001.
Dr. Ayres was the primary author of the chapter "Tumors of the Head and Neck" in the recently published textbook Veterinary Surgical Oncology.
Dr. Ayres was a staff surgeon at the Ontario Veterinary College from 1998-2000 and 2001-2002 before moving to the Barrie area, where she has provided referral surgery services since 2003.
Dr. Ayres and her husband, Peter, have 3 daughters and 2 dogs - Nelson (an American Staffordshire Terrier), Nezumi (a Caribbean rescue - possibly Dachshund x Chihuahua aka a "chiweenie"), and 2 cats - Agamemnon (Aggie for short) and Pippin.
When she has free time, she enjoys pilates, hiking, kayaking, and photography and strives to improve the gardens of her 150-year-old farmhouse.
